Battery integrators build sophisticated energy storage systems, yet generic cargo containers and prefab buildings may require substantial modification to align with the selected battery, thermal-management, access, and fire-safety criteria. Building custom enclosures in-house can also divert resources from the battery platform.
AEL provides custom-engineered enclosures built around the battery configuration. We coordinate structural engineering, 1, 2 or 3-hour construction, safety-system integration, and project documentation so the integrator can focus on the battery system, controls, and customer delivery.

Frequently asked questions
What is a custom BESS enclosure?
A custom BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) enclosure is a purpose-engineered structure designed to house a specific battery system configuration. The enclosure can be configured around the integrator’s rack layout, inverter placement, thermal-management approach, 1, 2 or 3-hour construction, and project design basis. AEL manufactures custom BESS enclosures in Santa Rosa, California and designs and builds them to UL 1487 and NFPA 855 standards, coordinating IFC and local criteria by project.
Does AEL work directly with battery integrators?
Yes. AEL partners with battery integrators, system builders, and EPC firms who need custom enclosures for their battery systems. We provide the enclosure engineering, fabrication, and safety systems — you provide the battery system, controls, and customer relationship. White-label capability is available for integrators who sell under their own brand.
What information does AEL need to quote a custom enclosure?
To provide an accurate quote, AEL needs battery-rack dimensions and weights, rack quantity, inverter or PCS specifications, BMS integration requirements, thermal-management approach, the required 1, 2 or 3-hour construction, site jurisdiction, access constraints, and project schedule. Share the available equipment schedule for a preliminary layout and quote.
Can AEL handle volume orders for integrators?
Yes. Our vertically integrated manufacturing facility supports both one-off custom builds and repeat production runs. For integrators with standardized battery configurations, we can establish a repeatable design that reduces engineering time on subsequent orders. Lead times for repeat configurations are typically shorter than first-article builds.
What certifications do AEL enclosures carry?
AEL battery enclosures are not UL listed. They are designed and built to UL 1487 and NFPA 855 standards, with IFC, OSHA, and local requirements addressed in the project design basis. Every build uses UL or ETL (Intertek) listed components, and control panels built to UL 508A are available as specified. AEL provides documentation to support the integrator’s permitting and AHJ review process.
How does AEL’s approach differ from container conversion companies?
Container conversions begin with an existing cargo envelope, while a purpose-built enclosure can coordinate structure, insulation, ventilation, access, 1, 2 or 3-hour construction, and equipment interfaces around the selected battery system. AEL documents the project-specific design basis for integrator and AHJ review.
