What are fume hoods for?

A fume hood is a contained workspace with ventilation designed to capture, confine, and expel harmful fumes, vapors, and particles produced during procedures conducted within it.

Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) oversees several responsibilities regarding fume hoods:

  1. Offering technical assistance in selecting appropriate fume hoods or other engineering controls for handling hazardous substances in research laboratories.
  2. Granting approval for the use of specific hazardous substances within a fume hood, including:
    • Radioactive material
    • Perchloric acid (requiring a specialized fume hood approved by EHS)
  3. Certifying fume hoods and maintaining certification documentation.
  4. Drafting guidance materials outlining proper usage protocols.

Laminar Flow Hoods

The laminar flow hood creates a sterile environment for work while also safeguarding against potential infectious splashes or aerosols produced during microbiological procedures. There are three main types of laminar flow hoods, classified as Class I, II, and III, each has been designed to accommodate different research and clinical requirements.

Class 1: Class I laminar flow hoods offer substantial protection to laboratory personnel and the environment when utilized alongside proper microbiological practices. However, they do not shield cultures from contamination. These hoods share design and airflow traits with chemical fume hoods.

Class 2:Class II laminar flow hoods are tailored for tasks involving BSL-1, 2, and 3 materials, ensuring an aseptic environment crucial for cell culture experiments. These cabinets are recommended for handling potentially hazardous materials like primate-derived cultures, virally infected cultures, radioisotopes, as well as carcinogenic or toxic materials

Class 3: Class III biosafety cabinets are hermetically sealed, offering the utmost protection to both personnel and the environment. These cabinets are mandatory for handling known human pathogens and other BSL-4 materials, ensuring maximum safety standards
