C1D1 Requirements:
C1D1, short for Class I, Division 1, is a classification system established by the National Electric Code (NEC) and outlined in the National Fire Protection Association’s Publication 70 (NFPA 70). It outlines the necessary electrical components, wiring, and safety measures essential for installation in hazardous environments.
For labs, these hazardous settings pertain to cannabis extraction rooms, where hydrocarbon extractions occur. Adequate electrical, ventilation, and explosion-protection features are not only mandated by law but also crucial for ensuring the safety of workers engaged in cannabis extraction activities.
As per NFPA 70, Class I, Division 1 spaces are defined as locations where:
- Flammable gas or vapor concentrations may exist under normal operational circumstances.
- Such concentrations may frequently occur due to repair, maintenance operations, or leakage.
- Equipment or process malfunctions may release flammable gas or vapor, potentially causing electrical equipment failure and acting as a source of ignition.
What are Some C1D1 lab Requirements?
- Adequate airflow throughout the C1D1 lab: This translates to the correct fan/motor combination for the size room that is being utilized.
- Installation and utilization of explosion-proof electrical and operational components: all components that are inside of the C1D1 boundary need to be “explosion proof”. This includes lights, gas detectors, any outlets, any alarms inside of the room.
- Measurement of flammable gas concentrations in the air: these labs need to include a C1D1 gas detection system that can precisely monitor the PPM that is inside the lab at any given time. This can fluctuate based on the operation being performed in the room.
- Installation and functionality of a fire suppression system: Fire suppression is usually a requirement in these labs to ensure safety in the event of a fire within the room. These can be dry chemical systems or wet systems depending on local AHJ requirements.
- Engineering/Peer reviews; Your C1D1 lab needs to have a professional peer review/engineering to ensure all components of the room have been verified and are safe to use in a C1D1 environment.
